Groups advocate use of treated nets in Ebonyi


BreakthroughAction- Nigeria (BA-N), adevelopmental partner under United State Agency for International Development (USAID),is partnering Ebonyi state government to control the scourge of malaria in the state.

The statecoordinator of BA-N, Enugu state MrsChidinma during a stakeholdersmeeting in Abakalikion possible ways to control malaria in Ebonyi disclosed that theorganization was engaging in an intervention programmes in four pilot localgovernment areas of the state.

She alsoappealed to residents of the state to always go for test whenever they suspectthey have malaria symptoms and get the correct medication for malaria treatmentin line with World health Organization (WHO) and national guidelines.

Chidinmasaid It is a follow up on HC3 Project which was on child birth spacing. BA-Nwill focus mainly on malaria prevention in Ebonyi. We will extend theintervention to more local government areas in Ebonyi.

Sheexplained further that the project is a 5-year project funded by USAID aimed ateducating residents of the state to adopt positive behaviours as Ebonyi stateis endemic for malaria.

Statecommissioner for health Dr Daniel Umezurike in his remarks said Ebonyi statehas maintained number one position in malaria control in the country.

According tohim, 1.7m insecticide treated mosquito nets were distributed in the state, butsome people use the net to prevent their farm crops instead of sleeping underit.

Dr Umezurikecalled on BA-N to carry out advocacy to the rural areas to ensure that peoplebegin to use insecticide treated mosquito nets so as to reduce the transmissionof the vector.
